overview of sikkim

sikkim the northeastern state of india and part of eastern himalayas shares borders with in north, bhutan in east, nepal in west and west bengal in south. it if one of the least populous and second smallest states of india. sikkim is famous for its biodiversity and is home to kangchenjunga, the highest peak in india and third highest on earth. gangtok is the capital and largest city in sikkim. infact sikkim comprises just 0.22% of india’s geographical area and accounts for 33% of nation’s biodiversity.

being a himalayan state, a key characteristic of sikkim is its mountainous terrain. almost the whole of sikkim is hilly in nature with altitude ranging from 280 mtrs to 8586 mtrs. the himalayan ranges surround northern, eastern and western borders of the state with the lower himalayas in the southern part of the state. there is very little lowland which makes it unfit for agriculture with the exception being some hill slopes which has been converted to terrace farms. infact being a Himalayan state, sikkim offers breathtaking views of snowcapped peaks, has high altitude lakes and passes which are one of the main reasons as to why people visit sikkim

another key characteristics of sikkim are the numerous snow fed streams that have created river valleys in west and south sikkim. these small streams combine into teesta river and its tributary rangeet which flows from north to south.
