overview of nepal

having opened its borders to outsiders in 1950s, nepal has been one of the favourite destinations for travellers attracting hordes of tourists year after year. inspite of being a small country landlocked and bounded by two of most populous countries in the indian and china, it boasts offers great diversity to the tourists which caters to almost every tastes. it has snow capped mountains, tropical rainforests, huge stretches of grasslands, flora & fauna, picturesque landscapes, glimpse of ancient culture, spirituality, adrenaline pumping adventures and so on. there are very few countries on this planet which can match the versatility of nepal. what one can do in nepal is endless and makes it a repeat destination offering something new everytime you visit this great country. it is perhaps best known for mount everest, the highest peak on planet earth.

 

an interesting observation about nepal, is that it does not ascend gradually from the plains. rather, it raises from several chains of the hills that are located in east west direction while finally terminating in highest mountain range in the world the himalayas. nepal as a country can be divided into three different regions: the northern part which is covered by the himalayan mountain ranges; the central area, which has low himalayan foothills which includes cities like kathmandu; and the southern part, which consists of vast plains and jungles.

 

nepal is rich with traditions of art and culture and kathmandu valley is a treasure house of ancient art and culture. the beautiful hindu temples and stupas of nepal are the major tourist attractions. it is the birthplace of lord buddha, apostle of peace and home to world’s only living goddess. the culture lovers can spend hours strolling around the three durbar squares and adminiring true nepali architecture, or chose to join pilgrims circumundulate the giant stupas and temples and get the blessings of almighty. in roughly about 20 kilometers radius in kathmandu valley, we have as much as seven world heritage sites declared by the unesco. where will you get this kind of concentration?

 

for nature lovers, nepal offers breathtaking view of himalayas, lush green hills, glimpse of traditional village lifes built on slopes of himalayas, beautiful landscapes and so on. the list is endless. nepal is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna found in various national parks and reserves spread accross the country.

 

but the best of nepal is probably reserved for adventure seekers. for trekkers there are long treks, short treks, easy treks, hard treks, village treks, adventure treks. the list is endless. for raftings, nepal has second biggest river system on this planet offering easy rapids to challenging rapids. for mountain expedition lovers, nepal has more than 300 peaks including mount everest which are open to climbing. many people may not be aware that it has eight out of 14 highest peaks in the world over 8000m which includes mt. everest (8848m), mount kanchenjunga (8586m), mount lhotse (8516m), mount makalu (8463m), mount cho oyu (8201m), mount dhaulagiri (8167m), mount manaslu (8163m) and mount annapurna (8091m). it also offers activities like bungy jumping, paragliding, mountain biking, canyoning, mountain flight, kayaking  and so on. it is perhaps land of paradise for adventure lovers.

 

for wild life lovers, nepal is home to endangered one horned rhinos and bengal tigers. elephent ride in chitwan national park can be a lifetime experience. many people may not be aware that this small himalayan country has 14 conservations parks for the protection of wildlife and rare plants.
