janakpur, famous hindu pilgrimage site is birthplace of goddess sita, wife of lord rama. the region is also famous as place of marriage between lord ram and sita. a capital of the ancients mithila kingdom, the town is also home to many important pilgrimage sites. janakpur is also linked with kathmandu by air and road. it is around 265 kms away from kathmandu via dhulikhel and 20 kms from indian border. it can also be reached from chitwan national park which is similar distance away. the historical town has many ancient temples, monasteries, arts and craft of numerous deities.

places of interest:

  • janaki temple – janaki temple resembling that of the mughal places, dedicated to goddess sita, is located at the center of janakpur. the temple is also known as the naulakhi temple or nine hundred thousands temple as nine hundred thousand rupees was spent in the construction of the temple. the temple sanctum houses idol of lord ram and mother sita as well as other related deities. situated adjacent to the janaki mandir are the vivaha mandap, ram temple, laxman temple and dharmashala.
  • ram mandir – the ram mandir is located in between the janaki temple and the holy dhanush sagar. the temple dedicated to lord ram is one of the famous temples of janakpur. huge fairs are hosted here on ram navami, vivah panchami and chhat festival. temple sanctum houses holds of lord ram and mother sita.
  • shree sankatmochan temple – this is only hanuman temple in janakpur and also in surrounding districts. it is believed that worshipping here will relieve from all the troubles and fulfil all wishes. large number of worshippers gathers at the temple every saturday and tuesday and also on other hindu festivals. the temple is situated at a distance of 10 minutes-walk from the janaki temple.
  • ratna sagar temple – the temple dedicated to lord ram and mother sita is tall and is surrounded by a pretty garden. a sacred pond called ratna sagar is located near the temple and is considered one of the most sacred ponds of janakpur.
  • dulaha dulahi temple – the temple is called dulaha-dulahi temple because of the idols of the deities are in form of bride and groom which is surrounded in a glass box. the deities housed in the temple are lord ram and mother sita.
