trashiyangste is a small but a rapidly growing town and administrative center of the district. the main town is situated in a small river valley. this area is famous for wooden containers and bowls. it lies at an elevation of 1,715 m.

places of interests:

trashiyangste dzong: previously known as the dongdi dzong, this is one of the oldest dzongs in bhutan. it is said to be built sometime in 9th century. later in the 15th century, terton pema lingpa decided to rebuilt the dzong during his visit to the place. the dzong was then renamed as trashiyangtse dzong. it was further renovated and sanctified by a sacred consecration ceremony in 2005.

holy places:

chhorten kora: it is the most important stupa in trashiyangtse built in 1740 by lama ngawang loday, the nephew of zhabdrung ngawang namgyal. the stupa was built to subdue a demon believed to have been living at the site where the chorten is now located.

gom kora: it is situated 24 km from the trashigang dzong in trashigang in the eastern bhutan. the name gomphu kora (gomphu – “meditation cave”, kora – “circumambulation”) is derived from a cave located in the place. guru rinpoche meditated for three days inside a rock cave in this place and subdued the evil spirit. in the 14th century, terton pema lingpa, visited gomphu kora. it was renovated and enlarged in the 15th century by yongzin ngagi wangchuk, the grandfather of shabdrung ngawang namgyel. he also inscribed murals on the walls of the temple.

short day trips:

bomdelling: bomdelling is a pleasant three hours of walk from chorten kora and is the annual migration place for the endangered blacknecked cranes during winters which fly over from tibet.

rangjung woesel chholing: half an hour drive from the trashiyangtse town this nyingmapa monastery was founded by garab rinpoche in 1990. the place gives a good view of the valley.
