majuli

majuli, world’s largest river island and place of satras is about 20 km from the jorhat city and located 347 kms from guwahati. the total area was about 1250 sq. km earlier which is now reduced to 875 kms due to soil erosion. the island is mostly populated by tribals which make the culture of the island quite unique and vibrant. in order to reach here, tourists have to get down as neemati ghat and take a ferry ride from there. the island is mainly famous for ‘satras’ or monasteries. these satras are an important part of neo vaishnavism culture.  the first satra was built by srimata sankara deva. each satra has its own unique and cultural significance. some of the key attractions/activites of majuli are as under:
