satras of majuli

majuli has a lot satras, vaishnavite monasteries, some of which date back to 16th century. these satras are also centre of cultural activities and principles of  vaishnavism are spread to common man through devotional music, songs, and dance forms. some of the key satras are as follows

  • samugiri satra where mask makers practice art of mask making
  • garmur satra which houses many ancient religious articles and artifacts, with bortop being the most important
  • auniati satra which has been in forefront of vaihnavism and sastriya culture in assam. performances here include various forms of prayers, dances and religious theatrical shows based on the great indian epics of puranas, vedas, ramayana, mahabharata, srimad bhagawat etc. this satra also houses wide collection of traditional assamese utensils, jewellery and handicrafts. old utensils, jewellery and handicrafts
  • kamalabari satra is well-known for performing arts and cultural practices like ankia bhaona, gayan bayan, satriya nritya, sutradhar nritya, mati akhara etc. it is also home to many articles related to art, culture, literature and classical studies.
  • dakhinpat satra is home for dances contributed by sri sankardeva like borgeet, matiakhara, jumora, chali, noyua, nande vringee among others
