tawang monastery also known as gaden namgyal lhatse, was founded by merak lama lodre gyamtso in 1680-81. it is the second largest monastery in world after borobudur in indonesia. built as large mansion, it is home to more than 300 monks. there is a massive statue of lord buddha which is around 8 meters in height. the monastery belongs to gelugpa sect of buddhism and the main temple has beautiful interiors which includes paintings of bodhisattvas. it is at an altitude of 10,000 ft and provides breath taking view of the tawang-chu valley.
