hajo located 25 km from guwahati is a sacred place for hindus, muslims and buddhists. most famous temple here is hayagriva madhava temple built on top of monikut hill which is dedicated to lord vishnu and attracts both hindus and buddhists pilgrims. as per the belief amongst few buddhists, this temple is where buddha achieved nirvana and is said to house buddha’s relics.
another important place here is powa mecca mosque built by mir lutufullah-i-shiraji in 1657. as per the belief, during foundation of the mosque some earth was brought from mecca. there are some less famous temples here like ganesha temple, kedareswara temple and kameswara temple.
