sualkuchi

located about 32 kms from guwahati, sualkuchi, is a village where almost all the households are weavers, involved in the traditional art of silk weaving. it is popularly known as “manchester of east”.  the village is a haven for various for various types of silks ranging from muga to pat and from ‘eri’ to ‘endi, silk. infact, the village has been declared as handloom heritage village. the village is rich in flora and fauna and number of migratory birds visit during the winters. sualkuchi as a silk weaving village was established in 17th century by king swargadeo pratap singha (ahom king). however, silk weaving here can be traced back to 10th-11th centuries when king dharma pal of the pala dynasty sponsored the craft by bringing the tanti weaving community from tantikuchi to sualkuchi.
