kamakhya temple which situated on top of nilanchal hill at a distance of about 10 km from railway station. it is one of the 51 shakti peeths dedicated to goddess durga. the famous ambubachi festival celebrated here is is a four-day long festival and is held every year during monsoon (mid-june).  as per the legend goddess kamakhya goes through her menstrual cycle for the first three days of the festivities. during the festival doors of the temple remain closed for three days as it is believed that the earth becomes impure for three days and during this period no farming work happens. on the fourth day the devotees are allowed to enter inside the temple for worship. the four-day festivity observes many tantrics coming from all around to show their powers and tricks. above kamakhya is another small temple, bhubaneshwari, from where one can have a bird’s eye view of the city.
