manas national park is located on foothills of eastern himalayas on the banks of river manas spread over an area of 950 sq. kms. manas river is an international border diving manas national park with royal manas national park of bhutan. it was declared sanctuary in dec. 01, 1928 and a national park on sept. 07, 1990. it is also one of nine tiger reserves in india and is a about 180 kms from guwahati. it is also a tiger reserve, elephant reserve, biosphere reserve and a unesco world heritage site.
there are four types of vegetation in manas national park namely, sub-himalayan light alluvial semi-evergreen forests (northern parts); east himalayan mixed moist and dry deciduous forests; low alluvial savanna woodland, and assam valley semi-evergreen alluvial grasslands.
park has large number of animals and birds species. there are approx 450 birds species, 50 species of reptiles, 55 species of mammals and few species of amphibians found here.
there are three ranges in the park – western range at panbari, central range at bansbari near barpeta and eastern range at bhuiyapara near pathsala. the park is divided by rivers and thus, it is quite hard to travel from one section to another. bansbari is the most visited range followed by
november to april is the best time to visit here when the weather is pleasant which increases the chances of spotting more animals.
