major festivals of assam

assam is land of fairs and festivals. celebration of these festivals is one of the very essence of assam and part of its colorful culture. the different tribes pay tribute to their culture and customs in their own unique and beautiful way.

 

  • bihu festival is one of the most important festivals of assam and represents  a harvest festival. the word “bihu” is derived from the language of dimasa tribe and is dedicated to brai shibrai. it is celebrated by all assamese people irrespective of caste, creed, religion, faith and belief. there are three bihu festivals in a year: bohag or rongali bihu for a good harvest celebrated in april, kaati bihu to mark cutting and binding of grains practised in october and magh or bhogali bihu  which marks the season of harvesting of grains and celebrated in january.
  • me-dum-me-phi is most important ahom festival i.e., the worship of ancestors which is performed annually on 31st of january and helps to develop social contacts and community feelings among the ahoms. the word ‘me’ means offerings. ‘dam’ means ancestors and ‘phi’ means gods. so the word ‘mae dam mae phi’ means offerings to the ancestors spirits.
  • baishagu is celebrated by the bodo kacharis of assam with much pomp and enthusiasm during mid april. it marks the beginning of the new year. the highlight is performance of traditional bagurumba dance.
  • ambubachi festival celebrated in kamakhya devi temple is a four-day long festival and is held every year during monsoon (mid-june).  as per the legend goddess kamakhya goes through her menstrual cycle for the first three days of the festivities. during the festival doors of the temple remain closed for three days as it is believed that the earth becomes impure for three days and during this period no farming work happens. on the fourth day the devotees are allowed to enter inside the temple for worship. the four-day festivity observes many tantrics coming from all around to show their powers and tricks.
  • majuli festival is one of the most beautiful festivals of assam on the banks of bank of river luit. all day and night long, cultural activities are organised in which enthusiasts people take part in large numbers. people from various parts of country also come down to showcase their talents. the festival is celebrated from 21st of november till 24th of november. majuli is just 20 km away from jorhat.
  • tea festival is celebrated to celebrate the tea production in jorhat also known as the tea capital of world during november and it last for three days. it is a great chance to taste fresh assam tea.
