holy places in bumthang

jambay lhakhang or jampey lhakhang (located in chokhor valley, bumthang): believed to have been built on the same date as ‘kyichu lakhang’ to subdue a demoness, it is one of two oldest temples in bhutan. this temple is believed to pin her left knee. it is also believed that guru rimpoche visited the site very often and deemed it sacred. in october one of the most spectacular festival, “jambay lhakhang drup” is staged here. it is located on way to kurjey lhakhang.

 

chakhar lhakhang (located in chokhor valley, bumthang): literally meaning the iron castle as the original palace was made of iron and hence the name “chakhar”. it was rebuilt in 14th century by terton dorji lingpa, a buddhist saint, over the ruins of ancient the original castle built by king sindhu raja. it is located on the main road, a short distance from jambay lhakhang. the temple is similar to a house but has a golden pinnacle which signals its religious status.

 

kenchogsum temple (located in chokhor valley, bumthang): also known as konchogsum lhakhang, this temple is believed to have been was founded by terton pema lingpa in 8th century. as per another believe king of water deities is said to have risen out of the lake beneath the monastery and had offer dragtshel a scroll and a pillar made out of stone. the original building was virtually destroyed by butter lamp fire in 2010. the modern structure was built by november 2014 and completely covers the restored remains of original temple. the main shrine of this monastery is a statue of vairocana. also there are statues of other deities such as avalokitsvara, padmasambhava as well as paintings of pema lingpa and longchenpa.

 

kunzongdrak goemba (located above chel tang valley): one of the most important sites related to terton pema lingpa, was constructed by pema lingpa in 1488. most of his sacred relics are kept here which includes the gilded stone bearing his footprint. the lhakhang is two hours walk above chel tang valley.

 

kurjey lhakhang (located in chokhor valley, bumthang): this complex of three temple is named after body (kur) print (jey) of guru rimpoche and is located just a few meters beyond jambay lhakhang. it is dedicated to the saint guru padmasambhava who was supposed to have meditated there in 8th century. the first temple is guru lhakhang (which houses the cave) built in 1652. the middle temple sampalundrup was built by the first king his majesty ugyen wangchuk in 1900, during his tenure as trongsa penelop. the third temple is recently constructed under patronage of her majesty queen mother ashi kesang wangchuk. this is the final resting place of the remains of the first three kings of bhutan. beside the monastery is a tall cypress tree that is believed to have sprouted from the walking stick of guru rinpoche.

 

lhodrak kharchu monastery (located in jakar, bumthang): this monastery was founded by namkhai nyingpo rinpoche, recognised as the reincarnation of a tibetan lhama, in 1984. since its establishment, the monastery has considerably developed with increase in number of monks and has become a part of an extensive effort to preserve and revitalize tibetan culture.

 

meber tsho or lake of burning fire (located on the way to tang village): this is considered to be a sacred lake of the bhutanese. it is believed that terton pema lingpa discovered religious treasures from this lake in the 12th century. on auspicious days many bhutanese offer butter lamps on this fresh water lake. it is located along the way to the tang village over the feeder road under bumthang valley. many tourist visit the site to observe spectacular beauty of this important historical and religious site.

 

ngang lhakhang (located in chokhor valley, bumthang): located in the nalakhar village in the chokhor valley. the present temple was built in the 15th century by lama namkha samdup in the site believed visited by the guru rinpoche.

 

nimalung dratshang (located in chumey valley in bumthang): approx 15 minutes drive from the road that branches off from chumey village, this dratshang was co-founded dasho gonpo dorji and doring trulku jamyang kunzang in the year 1935. this is a two storied temple decorated with murals of the nyingmapa and drukpa traditions. its main relic is the statue of guru rinpoche. here there are paintings of guru rinpoche and his disciples, the lineage of terton pema lingpa, and several masters affiliated with the monastery. nimalung tshechhu is one of the most important festivals held at the lhakhang.

 

tamshing lhakhang (located in chokhor valley, bumthang): meaning temple of the good message, this monastery lying on the other side of the river opposite the kurjey lhakhang was built in 1501 by terton pema lingpa. the temple has been restored at the end of the 19th century.

 

tang rimochen lhakhang (located in tang valley, bumthang): located below an enormous rock, lhakhang is believed to be blessed by guru rinpoche. a rock lying in front of temple bears the body print of the guru and two consorts. this site got its name from the tiger stripe markings on the cliff. the temple was founded in 14 century by dorji lingpa.

 

thangbi temple (located in thangbi village, bumthang): one of the historically significant temples which was founded by the 4th shamar rinpoche, chhoki drakpa in 1470. the lhakhang is approximately 45 minutes of walk from the road. this contains the statues of the past, present and the future buddha and three other clay statues dating back to 15th century.

 

tharpaling monastery (located above chumey valley, bumthnag): tharpaling, which means land of liberation is a sacred site and retreat cave of the longchen rabjam.  longchenpa established the monastery at the base of chodrak cliff, one of four great cliffs believed to have been blessed by guru rinpoche. the monastery contains statues of longchenpa and jigme lingpa in meditation posture and frescoes of the lineage of longchenpa and jigme lingpa. above the tharpaling monastery (to the north) is chodrak monastery, a place where guru rinpoche is said to have meditated.
