jakar dzong (located in jakar, bumthang): also known as yuelay namgyal dzong, jakar dzong literally means the castle of white bird. it is believed that in about 1549, when the then monks gathered to select a site for monastery, a big white bird rose suddenly in the air and settled on a spur of a hill which was interpreted as an auspicious sign. it now serves as administrative centre for the bumthang district. the bumthang tshechu is one of the most popular festivals is held here.
wangdicholing palace (located in jakar, bumthang): the palace was constructed as a private residence for trongsa penlop, jigme namgyal in the year 1857 and not as a fortress like other residences of royal family. it is the birth place of the first king of bhutan. since 2004 a small monk body consisting of 30 monks has been occupying a small portion of the palace.
