tango monastery (located north of thimphu): the monastery about 20 minutes’ drive from thimphu and founded by lama gyalwa lhanampa in the 13th century was built in its present form in 1688 by tenzin rabgye, the 4th temporal ruler. to reach the monastery there is a hike of about 1 – 1.50 hrs.  as per legend, the location of this monastery is the holy place where avalokiteshvara revealed himself as “the self-emanated form of the wrathful hayagriva”. zhabdrung ngawang namgyal meditated in its cave in the year 1616. it is the highest centre of buddhist learning in the country; almost every je khenpo (religious head of bhutan) completed the 9-year program there.
