mawphlang

mawphlang, famous for its sacred forest, is a beautiful village which is about 25 kilometres away from shillong and lies in east khasi hills. it has variety of species of plants and trees some of which more than 1000 years old. remember that no one is allowed to take anything from the forest since it is considered sacred. forest is protected by lyngdoh clan who believe that the deity labasa stays here who protects their village during crisis. the david-scott trail is located behind the forest.
there are a group of monoliths at the entrance—three standing or male stones and one seated female stone. the term mawphlang means “moss-covered stones” referring to the large number of moss-covered monoliths found in the forest.

  • david scott trail is 16-km trek built by david scott which stretches from mawphlang to ladmawphlang. it takes about 4 to 5 hours to cover 16 km of trail. rivers, massive rock formations, runing waters and streams flowing down from mountains, forest groves the trek has it all.
