mawsynram

mawsynram, located at a distance of 60 km from shillong and 81 km from cherrapunje at an altitude of 1400 m, it is scenic village and the wettest place on the earth. it receives around 11,872 mm of rainfall annually. it is also known for lush green vegetation, misty clouds, plunging waterfalls and beautiful orchids. ‘maw’ in mawsynram means ‘stone’ which symbolizes megaliths unearthed in the khasi hill area. some of the key attraction around here include:

  • mawjymbuin cave located in mawsynram is a religiously important site as it has a giant siva linga made from stalagmites. the cave is made calcareous sandstones and is 209 metre high. a small stream flows under the eastern portion of this cave.
  • mawlyngbna village is located around 15 kms from mawsynram. as it is located in extreme interiors of meghalaya, it is referred to as “edge of india”. the village if famous for natural water springs and lakes with the most famous being umkhakoi lake which is man made lake offering kayaking facilities.
  • jakrem located 30 kms from mawsynram is famous for hot water spring of sulphur which is believed to have curative medicinal properties.
