jomsom

jomsom is located at an altitude of 2,800 m in mustang, nepal and extends over both the banks of the kali gandaki river. as the district headquarters, it is primarily an administrative and commercial center with government officials and merchants rubbing shoulders with the local residents of the region, known as thakalis. a company of the nepalese army is stationed here. nearby is jomsom airport from where there are regular flights.it’s a small village in the mountainsand only basic accommodation is available here. the visitors may have to walk from the airport to the hotel which takes about 2-5 minutes. porters can also sent to the airport by the hotel to carry the luggage. drive to jomsom is quite challenging and standard time is of 8.5 hours.  the road is “rocky road” or unpaved with no black top. the drive to muktinath can be done by “4 wd jeep” (scorpio or similar)

  • muktinath (3800m): one of the holiest pilgrim destination hindus. this region is called muktichhetra where lord vishnu got himself free from the curse of sati. this is also considered as shaligram region where shaligrams are found along kaligandaki river. pagoda shaped temple is situated on a high mountain range and can be visited during fair weather only. the muktinath temple complex has 108 holy water spouts set on a wall for bath. it is also a pilgrimage for buddhists and known as chumig gyatsa, tibetan for ‘hundred waters’. it can also be reached by trek which begins from pokhara and flies out from jomsom. alternatively, the trek commences from jomsom and trek out to pokhara. the most suitable time to visit muktinath from march to may & october. november & february is cold but still devotees can travel. june to september is raining season.
