boudhanath stupa

boudhanath stupa: also known as khasti and a world heritage site, this biggest stupa in valley is about 6 km from the kathmandu city and an important place for buddhist pilgrims. this is one of the most important landmark in the city and is believed to be constructed in 5th century. it is about 36 meters high and has four pairs of eyes in the four directions. here visitors can see monks walking and circumambulating the stupa about in maroon robes. the area or the courtyard is a visual treat with colorful thangkas, tibetan jewelry, hand-woven carpets, masks, and khukuri knives sold in surrounding stalls. restaurants with roof-top sit-outs provide food with excellent views of boudhanath.
