taumadhi square: the second most visited place in bhaktapur, this square is located next to bhaktapur durbar square. it is also known taumadhi tole where tole stands for street market area. some of its famous attractions include:

  • the nyatapola temple: founded by king bhupatindra malla in 1702 ad, nyatapola in newari means five-tiered temple which symbolises five basic elements of nature. this beautiful temple built in pagoda style is made of clay bricks and wood, is considered to be one of the finest and tallest architectural masterpieces of nepal. doors and windows of the temple are decorated with carved figures portraying divine stories. inside the temple there is an idol of deity, siddhi laxmi, goddess of wealth.
  • bhairavnath temple: this pagoda style temple dedicated to lord bhairav, wrathful form of lord shiva is located near nyatapola. it was buily by king jagat jyoti malla which was remodeled by king bhupatindra malla into current structure.
  • teel mahadev narayan temple: this temple dedicated to lord vishnu built in 12th century ad lies in south of nyatapola. a disc, lotus, conch shell and mace which are four emblems of lord vishnu are on pillars located to the sides of the entrance.
  • stone column: on top of stone column facing the palace there is statue of king bhupatindra malla in the act of worship with both hands folded.
