how to reach nepal?

entry to nepal can be made by air, road or rail.

  • travel by air – tribhuvan international airport is the only gateway to kathmandu for the tourists who come by air. the airport named after king tribhuvan, the 8th shah king of nepal and is situated about 4.5 miles east of the city. it is well connected to almost all the major destinations of the world. all the major carriers including air india, jet airways, indigo, spicejet, qatar airways, turkish airlines, flydubai, royal nepal airlines, biman bangladesh airlines, thai airways, ethiad airways, oman air, silkair flight, malindo airlines and many more fly to nepal. within nepal, the entire country is connected through air, even though by small aircrafts at most places with smaller runways.

 

  • travel by road – while travelling by road, you can enter nepal from following border points:
    • kakarbhitta (eastern nepal) with panitanki in indian side in west bengal – kakarbhitta is a small town on the border between nepal and india which is about 15 – 17 hours (610 kms) away from kathmandu and about an hour drive from siliguri. the closest airport is at bhadrapur, which is about 25km from there. the flight from bhadrapur takes about 45 mins to land in kathmandu.
    • biratnagar with jogbani in indian side in biharbiratnagar lies 399 km away from kathmandu and 6 km of indian border. the airport at biratnagar has frequent flights to kathmandu and to other airports inside nepal. it takes about 35 mins to reach kathmandu from biratnagar by flight. indian rail lines ends at jogbani which has direct trains to katihar, kolkata and new delhi.
    • birgunj (central nepal) with raxaul in indian side in bihar – for indian tourists birgunj known as the “gateway to nepal” is the main entry point to nepal by land especially coming from calcutta and patna. it is about 210 kms from kathmandu. it is connected to raxaul by rail. raxaul station & sugauli station (17 miles from raxaul) is well connected by train to major cities in india. simara which is about 20 km from birgunj is the nearest airport and it takes about 20 minutes to reach kathmandu by air.
    • bhairahawa (western nepal) with sunali in indian side in uttar pradesh – bhairahawa also known as siddharthanagar, is about 9 hours drive and 280 kms from kathmandu. it is gateway to lumbini, the birth place of lord buddha. it takes about 30 minutes to reach kathmandu from bhairahawa by flight. do not buy any travel services in sunauli, and ignore all attempts to offer you these.
    • nepalgunj (western nepal) with rupaidiha in indian side in uttar pradesh – nepalgunj is about 13 hours drive and 530 kms away from kathmandu and is connected by direct flights to kathmandu.
    • dhangadhi (western nepal) with gauriphanta in indian side in uttar pradesh – dhanghadi is about 660 kms away from kathmandu. it is mainly used by people of delhi which is about 6 hours drive to travel to nepal.
    • mahendranagar (western nepal) with banbasa in indian side in uttarakhand – mahendranagar is a small town which is about 18-19 hours drive and 695 kms from kathmandu.
    • kodari (north central nepal) about 7 hours drive from kathmandu lies on the nepal-china border. the very famous hot water spring of nepal called tatopani is also very close to kodari.

 

  • travel by rail – there are two railway lines operational in nepal.
    • raxaul – sirsiya: this is 6 km long line from raxaul (india) to sirsiya inland container depot near birganj mainly used for freight transport.
    • jayanagar – janakpur: this is 53 km long line from jayanagar (india) to janakpur mainly used for passenger.
