visit the three durbar squares – durbar square literally mean place of palaces and are fine example of ancient life and style and are master pieces of newari architecture. all the three durbar squares – kathmandu, patan and bhaktapur have made it to unesco world heritage sites list. there are numerous temples within these squares. you can spend hours walking here and admiring the architecture. in the markets around the durbar square you can buy traditional handicrafts. no visit to nepal is complete without visiting the durbar squares.
visit pashupatinath temple during maha shivaratri – on the day of maha shivaratri, thousands of devotees throng pashupatinath temple which include sadhus. these sadhus, some of whom are covered with ashes or naked are oblivious to people around them and have consumed hashish or marijuana. these drugs are illegal in nepal for whole of the year except during this festival in honour of lord shiva. most of these are friendly and readily pose for photographs. just make sure to bring plenty of change! hashish is readily available through out kathmandu on this day and you can chose to have in the form of laddus, lassi or in form of cake to get high.
get blessings of living goddess – nepal is the only country which has a living goddess wherein a young girl is chosen at an age 3 or 4 from newari bajracharya caste as a form of goddess durga. she is said to have some attributes like having a body like a banyan tree and eyelashes of a cow. as a part of a rule, she has to be fearless and is not allowed to cry or smile publicly, in front of anyone who is not living with her. as per beliefs movements of the goddess during offerings are regarded as omens which can be good or bad:
if he cries or laughs loudly than it brings serious illness or even death.
if she weeps and rubs her eyes then it brings immediate death.
if she trembles or shivers than person goes to jail
her claps causes fear to the king
if she picks up food offered than the person will lose money.
you are considered lucky if none of the ominous signs happens as it is believed that the worshipper’s wish will be fulfilled. hence next time to visit her, pray she does nothing!
