chungthang, a small town on way to yumthang stands at the confluence of the rivers lachen chhu and lachung chhu where they merge and form the teesta river. located at an altitude of 1790m, it is also one of the military bases of the country, especially due to its proximity to the china border. on the way to lachung/lachen it offers a good refreshment break to sample some of local delicacies.

chungthang valley is considered to be a sacred place by locals and buddhists. it is believed to be the place which has been blessed by guru padmasambhava. there is a rock here which to this day bears the hand and footprints of guru padmasambhava.

here there is also a paddy field, which is nothing less than natural wonder as the climate of chungthang is not suited to growing paddy.
