unakoti about 178 kms from agartala and about 11 kms from kailashahar is a centuries old shaivite pilgrimage site which dates back to 7th – 9th centuries. the word ‘unakoti’ means one less than a ‘koti’ or crore (ten million). as per the legend, lord shiva spent a night here on his way to kashi and was followed by 99,99,999 gods and goddesses. he had asked his followers to wake up before sunrise and to move towards kashi. however no one woke up except lord shiva. before he left for kashi alone, he put a curse on others and turned them to stone, which is how the site got its name. however, not that many sculptures are found now. the images found here are of two types viz. rock-carved figures and stone images. a central shiva head which is also known as ‘unakotiswara kal bhairava’ and is about 30 feet high including a decorated head dress which is about 10 feet high flanked by goddess durga on one side and goddess ganga on the other along with gigantic ganesha figure deserve special mention in the rock cut carvings. apart from these there are various other stone as well as rock cut images at unakoti
