tripura, the third smallest state of india located in the footfills of himalayas is landlocked by bangladesh in north, south and west and by assam and mizoram in east. it lies in one of the most interior parts of our country and has just one national highway – nh-8, connecting tripura to the rest of the country. the landscape of tripura consists of hills, valleys and plains. more than half of the state’s area i.e. approx. 58% is covered by forests.

 

similar to other neighbouring states, tripura economy is also mainly dependent on agriculture with rice being the major crop. rubber and tea are other important crops of the state. the other major industries here are brickfields, tea industry and natural gas production.

 

bengalis and the ethnic residents of tripura “tripuri” are the majority of the population. in terms of tribal population chakma and halam are the major ones. ancient name of tripura is kirat desh as mentioned in mahabharata. infact reference for state of tripura can be  found in maharabharata, the puranas and edicts of ashoka i.e. stone pillar inscription of emperor ashoka from third century. the name “tripura” is derived from “tripura sundari”, the presiding deity of the temple tripura sundari at udaipur, one of the 51 shaktipeeths in india.
